Fate of Brooklyn Mother is on ICE

Although Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced last week that it has reviewed nearly 220,000 cases at the request of President Obama who wants to focus on deporting people with criminal records, only 7.5% of those cases will be closed using prosecutorial discretion. Many law-abiding immigrants such as Sara Martinez, an Ecuadorian mother of a 6-year-old US citizen daughter will not qualify for the exercise of prosecutorial discretion. Although Ms. Martinez has some health issues and has sole custody of a young US citizen daughter, ICE has denied her request for prosecutorial discretion three times despite Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s support.
